Assam: AI Based Software To Eliminate Jumbo Train Accidents

GUWAHATI : Jumbo deaths due to train accidents is currently a concerning and familiar issue in Assam. Several such cases has been reported last year. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come up with a new technological solution to eliminate elephant deaths caused due to train accidents.

The Northeast Frontier Railway has (NFR) proposed the solution through utilisation of AI based software. NFR initiated supervision of animals in 11 elephant corridors, covering a distance of 70 km by using Intrusion Detection System (IDS).

These IDS came into action in August 2022. Ever since then, zero accident cases has been registered in the Lumding and Alipurduar division. Based on the success of IDS, NFR is now all set to establish the new technological intervention in 75 more more elephant corridors.

NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer, Sabyasachi De explained how the software could be able to detect movement of elephants, humans and other animals. The AI based software can also detect the exact distance of movement.

The alerts will be directly sent to the controlling room along with the section station head. The vibrations detected by the device will be captured and transferred to a tablet-type device, for the loco pilots.

De further stated that, the trains are usually advised to pass on cautiously in the elephant corridors. However, the loco pilots will now get a knowledge about the exact location and movement of elephant near the tracks.

Accordingly, the speed of the train could be regulated beforehand. This particular system will felicitate in eradicating the jumbo accident cases in the region, added De.

He further mentioned that NFR has 86 elephant corridors in total, which covers upto 226 km. The department is planning to establish the system in all the left out corridors by 2024. Moreover, the newly proposed AI based system can also detect mismanagement is tracks, wheel flats and illicit excavation work near railway tracks.
